Common Causes of Year-Round Allergies in Dogs

Does your dog scratch, lick, or chew at their skin no matter the season? You’ve done all the things for your dog’s itching… you have met with the vet time and time again, you have given the meds, your fingers are pruned from all the baths, but your dog is still itching. What the heck is going on? While many people blame pollen or grass allergies, year-round itching can often have a different underlying cause. Chronic itching can result from skin infections, food allergies, environmental allergies, or even certain medical conditions. When there is no relief in sight- even in the dead of winter- we have to consider all the non-seasonal causes of atopic dermatitis in dogs. Finding the true cause is the first step toward giving your dog lasting relief.

The symptoms will look the same as dogs with seasonal allergies:

Constant scratching

Licking or chewing the paws

Recurrent ear infections

Hair loss

Red, inflamed skin

Hot spots

Frequent skin infections

Brown saliva staining on the feet

When we get to the point that we can clearly say your pup does not have seasonal allergies, it is time to start digging a little deeper. Non-seasonal itching in dogs may be a result of underlying metabolic diseases altering skin health, allergies to food, or allergies to environmental triggers that do not change with the season. It can start getting a little complicated- so hang with me and let’s dive into the possibilities!

Metabolic Diseases

Let’s start with the first one- underlying metabolic disease. When we first start to treat your dog for itching, we may not jump to running bloodwork right away if your pet appears otherwise healthy. But if we are having trouble getting the itching, hair loss, or skin infections under control, this should be our first step in investigating the cause. Diseases like Diabetes Mellitus, Cushing’s Disease, and Hypothyroidism affect the healthy turnover and protective barrier of the skin. That opens the door to bacteria, yeast, and dry thinning skin that causes itch. If these diseases are present, we must get them under control if we have any hope of improving the itch. Your veterinarian will run tests to determine if these diseases are present and advise on the best treatments for them if found.

Food Allergies

Next, we should discuss food allergies. This is a hot button topic. It usually is one of the first things to blame when we see our dog itch, but in reality true food allergic dogs make up a smaller percentage of the itchy population.

Food allergic dogs can react to a wide variety of food sources but the most common are:

Chicken

Beef

Dairy

Wheat

You may be frustrated to find that you have changed the food many times but have seen no improvement. This is because dog foods have many ingredients and we can’t be sure which ones will cause a reaction, and those that are not made with the intention of being hypoallergenic often have contaminants from many protein sources. If you know anyone with a peanut allergy or Celiac’s- you can relate to the need for things to be truly allergen-free. The only real way to diagnose a food allergy is to commit to a strict food trial with a prescription grade hypoallergenic diet for 8 weeks. Along the way we will assess your dog’s itch level and if we can reduce or eliminate anti-itch medications. While a food trial can be a lot of work, it is totally worth it if you learn you can ditch the daily pills and frequent baths!

Atopy

Our final step along this journey is testing for environmental allergies-the major players that don’t come and go with the seasons.

Common environmental allergens include:

Weeds

Pollens

Dust mites

Mold spores

Pet/Human Dander

Storage Mites

Grasses

Trees

When pet’s have a non-seasonal allergic dermatitis and are itching all year we refer to this disease as atopy. The gold-standard recommendation is to have skin testing performed with a dermatologist (just like a human may have for their severe allergies). There are also blood allergy testing panels which can be done through our hospital or your local veterinarian which also have good success rates. These tests identify your pet’s allergic triggers. I would advise against any do-it yourself allergy testing you can order online. The correctness of these panels cannot be verified.

So, you get the results, what then? You can’t burn every pine tree to the ground…right? Right! The goal of allergy testing is to develop immunotherapy. These are injections or oral drops that are formulated specifically for your dog to train their immune system to stop overreacting to those specific triggers. This is the last step on our journey because we must use these products for a whole year before we can determine if they are really working. It is important that we have ruled all other causes out first.

What About Meds?

I get it, running the gamut of testing is expensive and time consuming. If my dog is itching all year, can we just give them meds? The answer is yes, maybe. Luckily, there are now several options when it comes to treating your dog’s itch. The newer generation products known as JAK-inhibitors and monoclonal antibodies provide much safer long-term itch control than the steroids we used in the past, you may have heard of them by their brand names Numelvi, Apoquel, or Cytopoint. It is important to note however- that if your dog develops a secondary infection- it will need to be treated to completely control the itch. Also for some dogs with atopy or food allergies- the allergic stimulus (the environmental trigger or the food) is so strong that daily medication still does not fully control the itch. For those dogs, complete testing and correct identification of the source of the issue is paramount.

Relief Is Possible!

Ok so if you’re overwhelmed at this point, I understand. There is a lot to it. Watching your dog itch day in and day out is frustrating. Many dogs live with chronic itching for months or even years before the underlying cause is identified. Because several different conditions can look nearly identical, finding the answer often requires a step-by-step diagnostic approach rather than guessing. With the right diagnosis and treatment plan, most dogs can enjoy significant long-term relief. Work with us or your local veterinarian through all the steps so we can correctly identify the problem and get your pet on the track to comfort again.

ICYMI: Read all about seasonal allergies and itching in dogs in our previous blog post Why is My Dog So Itchy?
